A series of three sculptures, “Live, Settle, Advance” is a representation of the History of Tigard. Located along the Outdoor Museum trail, each sculpture sit atop 6-foot-tall pedestals, elevating them as distinctive facets of history. Made from mild steel, each open framework sculpture symbolizes the people who lived on and developed the land. “Live”, is a mortar and pestle, an important tool used by the Native Americans of the region. Simple line work in metal on the surface illustrates edible plants and tools. A stump and axe represent “Settle”, a nod to the pioneers and their resourcefulness in logging and developing the land. On it are tools of the pioneers, symbolizing a cultured way of life. “Advance” is a section of railroad track, signifying advancement through the railroad’s ability to move people and goods to and from the area. Railroad paraphernalia oversized track section. All three works honor those who came before us as an abstract rendition of the local history.
